i feel like i spend most of my furniture day dreaming time thinking about long farm tables for my dining room. well, the dining room i’ll hopefully have one day. right now we’re lucky to fit a tiny ikea table inside our dining area, but one day i’m going to have a huge wooden table with a dramatic chandelier where all of my friends and family can gather to eat. until then, i’ll keep day dreaming about all of the dining rooms i love and how i could incorporate parts of them into my own dream room. so today i thought i’d post another sneak peek “best of” devoted to dining rooms. because i had too many favorites (50+) to put in one post, i broke them apart into two guides. one with round tables (today) and one with square or rectangular tables (coming soon). round tables are so great for small spaces so i thought i’d start with them, since so many of us are living in less than giant spaces. stay tuned for the rectangular and square dining room table roundup soon. until then, happy dining!
There’s something exciting about garages—those tiny limbo-like appendages that store cars, bikes, tools, and piles of retired crap—something that seems to imply possibility. Indeed, these spaces offer more than just storage options—they are (with a little sprucing up, of course) a refuge, a second living room, a creative launchpad, a band-practice studio. For Stacia and Phil Samartan, the garage at their Long Beach, California home would serve as a formal dining room. With the help of interior designer Susie Ho, the couple’s garage—a space that could have easily been drab and uninspired—was transformed into a stunning showpiece; a space that stands out while fitting in to the space’s architecture and the locale’s aesthetic. Check out all of the photos, plus Susie’s design notes after the jump!
So many of my childhood memories revolve around my parents’ dining room. It’s played host to all four of us kids’ high school and college graduation dinners, 15 years worth of Christmas breakfasts, and every birthday of mine since I was 13. Painted in a rich cranberry color, the room has become a symbol for laughter and bonding, and a place where both sides of my family have cried tears of joy and sadness. That being said, I’m never surprised when other homeowners gush over how important their dining room has been to them, too. Over time, their spaces have gathered more and more memories, each one becoming permanently etched in the grain of a wooden table or the cushion of a chair.
