Cost: $5000 (for all custom woodwork throughout the house, including the bookshelf) and $300 (paint, wood, fabric, and floor work in dining room) Basic Steps: The dining room involved patching, caulking, and painting the ceiling and walls. Then we installed the picture rail, added molding and wood to the lower portion of the walls, and caulked and painted them. The paint on the ceiling is Behr Skyline Steel; Behr Silver Hill for the walls. All furniture was thrifted except for kid chairs, which are from Ikea. If I can do it, you can too! My advice is to not let yourself get overwhelmed by the enormity of the task. Just do a little bit whenever you get a chance, and eventually you’ll get ‘er done!

My advice is to consult with the pros. I collaborated on this room with my good friend and interior designer Autumn Clemons. I knew what I wanted, but she took my vision to the next level. Wallpapering the tray ceiling never occurred to me, and now it’s one of my favorite parts of the room. Having someone with the training and design eye in your corner can keep you from making costly mistakes and really make any project a show-stopper. I think there’s a misconception that hiring a designer is a huge expense. But these days, there are so many talented designers offering e-services, it’s really affordable for any budget.

i’m a big fan of wallpaper accent walls and this dining room from rebekah at orange poppy is a great example. just a few hours of pasting and hanging and you’re left with a wall full of color and pattern. i love the new blue and green palette rebekah decided to go with- especially that blue hutch. so cute. click here to check out rebekah’s shop and here to check out her blog.

Basic Steps: First we painted the walls, cut the wood for the window bar and painted them. I previously made a chandelier out of an old pulley I wanted to hang above the table. We just placed the already existing furniture, used an ikea desk as a dining table, because it was much more narrow than our old table, hang the mirror and decorated with fleamarket finds (candle holder and folding chairs) I once purchased.

My advice is don’t get unmotivated because you have a small space! You can do anything, just put your mind to it! There is tons of inspiration on the web, soak it all in and come up with your own unique space!

Basic Steps: This project was tricky, in that it involved convincing my husband that painting the space black was not going to make the room feel too dark. I had a mood board of magazine tears taped to the walls for about two months before he was convinced. After that milestone, we ripped up the carpet, had the flooring installed and then painted. We assembled the shelving, applied the wallpaper to the inset ceiling and put up the chandelier. Then came furniture, drapes and finishing touches.

piquis reader kati driscoll purchased a victorian home from the 1870s that was in pretty rough shape. her dining room has heavy black soon along the walls and carpeting, holes in the wall and all sorts of pet damage. so she went to town on the space and decided to make things over! my favorite project of hers is the dining room- she ripped up the aging carpets, found beautiful heart pine flooring underneath, and sanded and stained the floors along with help from her dad and brother (her mom did the polyurethane coating!). after the floors were done, kati added wallpaper from ferm living and and a new coat of paint. as it that wasn’t enough, she also decided to open up the fireplace to expose the brick! great work, kati! click here for more pictures

The lesson I’ve learned from this Before & After is that if formal dining isn’t your thing, you can turn your dining room into an awesome home library — that’s a valuable lesson in my book. Jennifer enlisted the help of her friend, interior designer Autumn Clemons, to revamp this beige box and turn it into a dark, dramatic and ultra-modern space. Splurging on key pieces like the curtains and the sculptural light fixture was a wise decision; they really stand out and pull the entire look together. I’m sure this room will see far more use than it did prior to the redesign. Great job, Jennifer and Autumn!

We’ve all been there. Faced with a room that desperately needs an update, but a wallet that desperately needs a fill-up. Redesigning a room doesn’t come cheap, especially when factoring in all-new furniture and fixtures. Oftentimes, one might find themselves ogling over home goods in shop catalogues, but opting to wait a little longer on the renovation because of their ultimate price tag. When Felicia Brickey of Little Brick Home encountered this issue with her kitchen, however, she was undeterred. Instead of handing over an arm and a leg for big-bucks designer furnishings, she opted to get the same look through the DIY route, furnishing the room with a mixture of self-made creations and budget finds. The results, achieved for a little shy of $400, are even better than the pricy alternative. The space went from drab and ordinary to elegant and charming. Check out all of the pictures plus links to the DIYs and product sources after the jump!

this bold staircase makeover comes from dominique plourde of made in quebec. she recently had the urge to paint the walls of a staircase leading to her basement so she decided to take a risk! after taping up a square pattern in the hall, dominique painted the hallway a vivid mix of pinks and reds- and now she has a cheerful pattern to welcome her every time she visits the basement. great work, dominique!
